Significance of Mother’s Day Celebration [Mother’s Day 2024]

Anna Jarvis Turns Mother’s Day into a National Holiday [Mother’s Day 2024]
  • At the beginning of the 1900s, the idea of Mother’s Day becoming an accepted holiday started with Anna Jarvis, who was Ann Reeves Jarvis’s mother.
  • Following Ann’s death in 1905, Anna decided to establish Mother’s Day to celebrate the exemplary motherly traits and enormous efforts mothers undertake for their children.
  • Backed by John Wanamaker, a Philadelphia-based department store owner, Anna created the first Mother’s Day celebration that was held in a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia 1908 in May.
  • At the same time no less than four thousand people assembled at Wanamaker store in Philadelphia to commemorate the day.
  • Proud of the success of her first observance, Anna, who never married or had children, was urged to have a national observance of Mother’s Day.
  • She claimed that as most of the American holidays focused on male accomplishments therefore started to vigorously write letters to newspapers and influential people urging them to recognize mothers as a separate case worthy of a dedicated holiday.
  • By 1912 several states, towns, and churches had also adopted Mother’s Day as a yearly celebration. Additionally, Anna created the Mother’s Day International Association, which joined her efforts.
  • But her hard work ended in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson officially established the 2nd Sunday of May as Mother’s Day.

Why do we celebrate Mother’s Day?

Mother’s Day initially came in the closing of the 19th century and later it has become a universal event that marks a tradition that is commonly observed by many cultures and customs across the planet.

The dating and celebrations may be different from culture to culture, nevertheless, the love and gratitude with which parents are celebrated never wane to thank and honor the mothers who play such an important role in our lives.

The history behind Mother’s Day is quite charming! But to learn about the “mother” of Mother’s Day, we need to journey back to 1864—the year Anna Jarvis came into this world.

Finally,

Mother’s Day is not exactly a fixed date on the calendar, but something like an emotional fondness for the sacrifice, devotion, and affection of mothers in the world. It is the time to make our hearts melt deep by honoring the immense impact they have on us, and by nicely expressing gratitude.

It may be the gift, gesture or just imparting quality of time to their moms on Mother’s Day that gives them a strong perception of the bond between a mother and her child.

“A mother’s love is the fuel that enables a normal human being to do the impossible.” – Marion C. Garretty
